Students are welcome to see a counselor during their own lunch shift to visit the pantry now for food or clothing needed for the summer. 

Testing Out Applications are due to Mrs. Roberts by May 4th. A list of testing out classes is available from Mrs. Roberts. 8th Grade students who are applying should have a 3.0 or higher in the subject area they want to test out of and there is a $150.00 fee for each testing out subject. 

National Prevention Week 2018 Essay Contest- information is available in Mrs. Roberts' office and the paper must be submitted by May 18th. Winners will win an Apple iPad.

Governor's STEM Institute
Current 7th and 8th graders are invited to apply for Gov. STEM Institute which will be held at WVU for 7th graders from June 25-July 3 or July 5th to July 13th. The 8th graders will be at Greenbank Observatory from July 22nd to August 4th. The institute is free but students must go to https://govschools.wv.gov/gsi/Pages/default.aspx to apply. At the site, go to the bottom of the page under STEM Institute and select "Applications and Forms" from the list. Students who are applying should have high grades in math and science as well as high Smarter Balanced scores and teacher recommendations. See the counselors for more information. Applications must be completed by April 10th online and turned in to the South Counselor Mrs. Roberts.


8th graders will begin high school scheduling. The South counselors will visit Science classrooms on Jan. 24th to discuss class selection sheets and two year plans.
The parent night will be at Morgantown High on Jan. 24th from 5:30 to 7:30. Course selection sheets will be due to counselors at South Middle on February 1st. Students will need to get a parent signature on the sheets before turning in.


Grief group started in November and will continue each Thursday in December. If you would like your student to be a part of the next grief group, please contact Mrs. Roberts at earoberts@k12.wv.us. Your child will need to bring home a group permission form to be signed and returned to Mrs. Roberts. 

We have a clothing and food pantry at South Middle and if your child is in need, have them see one of the counselors. We have jackets, gloves, and hats, as well as other clothing and we have food items and school supplies.

College Application and Career Exploration Week will be November 6th to the 10th. You can find out more information about this state wide program at cfwv.com. We will dress up on Tuesday 7th in our favorite college's colors and gear. Also, dress up day on Thursday 9th- 'Dress for Success". Students can wear interview attire or dress up in their future career clothes. 

November 13th starts American Education Week.

Grief Group will start on November 16th during Stallion Time. Location will be announced later. If you want to be in the group, please see a counselor for a permission slip. Turn slips back into the counselors. 

Students who turned in papers to Mrs. Roberts to be Ambassadors this year will be trained on November 17th in the Maker Space most of the day. More details are coming. Please let Mrs. Roberts know if you are not going to be in school that day. 


October 2nd- Mrs. Roberts will be teaching a careers lesson in the 7th S.S. Classes. We will be exploring the Occupational Outlook Handbook site at https://blogs.bls.gov/blog/category/occupational-outlook-handbook/
We will also view the TED Talk at https://www.ted.com/talks/jarrett_j_krosoczka_how_a_boy_became_an_artist

October 2nd- All students will participate in an Advisory lesson which will focus on cafeteria procedures and create a project to celebrate National Cook's Day on Friday October 6th. 

October 9th and 10th- Mrs. Roberts will be teaching a career lesson in the 8th Grade S.S classes. 8th Graders will create electronic career portfolios using the CFWV site found at:  https://www.cfwv.com/

South Middle will be participating in National Suicide Awareness Week from September 11th to September 15th. Morning announcements will be made for the student body.


The counselors will be coming into the classrooms to meet with all students to review the SMS Counseling Department and discuss how to see a counselor. This year, Mrs. Roberts will serve students in the 7th grade and 8th grade students whose last name starts with M to Z. Mrs. Moore is the 6th grade counselor and will serve 8th grade students with last names A to L. Counselors will also discuss Jamie's Law and each student will receive a handout. Leadership training will also take place during the first lesson.
