Meet Your Counselors

The primary audience for the "Counselors' Corner" is parents. We want to inform parents about the school counseling program and state our willingness to work as part of a team to maximize the functioning of all South Middle School students. A school counseling program is comprehensive in scope, preventative in design and developmental in nature. The South Middle counseling program is designed to ensure that every student receives the program benefits. The program focuses on what students should know, understand, and be able to do in 3 areas: academic, career, and personal/social. The majority of the school counselors' time is spent in direct services with students; however, the counselors are available to parents and staff for consultation. We support a safe learning environment and work to safeguard the human rights of all members of the community.

What is Counseling?
Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education and career goals (American Counseling Association, 2010). Counselors at SMS help students with immediate concerns, but may need to offer community counseling resources to parents and guardians if long term counseling is needed.
