A special thank you to Brad Gilbert, Director of Aviation Technology, from the WVU K-12 Speaker’s Bureau, for speaking with all of our South students today!

Mr. Gilbert shared valuable information about the many opportunities available through Pierpont Community & Technical College, including exciting new career opportunities in Aviation Technology. His presentation gave students a glimpse into the education, training, and careers available right here in our region.

We appreciate Mr. Gilbert taking the time to inspire our students, introduce them to new possibilities, and help them begin thinking about their future careers. Thank you for helping our students see where their interests and talents can take them!

Students in our Art classes recently explored their creativity through two engaging lessons. One class designed their own unique wallpaper patterns, experimenting with shapes, colors, and repetition. Another class created beautiful fall-themed drawings using oil pastels, capturing the colors and feeling of the season. Both lessons gave students the opportunity to express their creativity and showcase their individual artistic styles!

Our 8th graders had some fun learning about irony by looking at pictures that show unexpected or opposite outcomes! Students learned iIrony is when the outcome or meaning of a situation is different from what we would normally expect. Learning to recognize irony helps middle school students become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

Our 7th grade ELA students were busy building their language skills today! Students practiced roots and origins of words, completed their bell ringer activities, and took time to write self-reflections about their learning.

Understanding the roots and origins of words helps students become stronger readers and writers. When students recognize common word roots, they can use those clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words, expand their vocabulary, and better understand what they read. These skills are especially important in 7th grade as students encounter increasingly challenging texts and vocabulary across all subject areas.

We love seeing our students actively learning, thinking, and reflecting on their progress!

We are so lucky to offer Woodshop classes at our middle school, where students get hands-on experience using sanders and other woodworking equipment to create their own projects. A special thank-you to Mr. Bartholow for sharing his skills and helping students create wood products they can be proud of and cherish for a lifetime!

Our students are showing great progress and putting their math skills into action! 📊 The pie charts highlight Mr. Neal and Ms. Custer’s ALEKS progress by class, giving us a snapshot of the hard work students are putting into their learning. Students also completed “The Graph of Me!”, a fun graphing activity that allowed them to collect, organize, and represent information about themselves. It’s wonderful to see students building math skills while making learning personal and meaningful!

Today, both 8th grade science classes were busy working on CER labs! CER stands for Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning—a framework that helps students make a claim, support it with evidence from their investigations, and explain how that evidence supports their thinking.

Using CER in middle school science encourages students to think critically, communicate their ideas clearly, and connect scientific evidence to their conclusions. It’s a great way to help students build the reasoning and problem-solving skills they will use throughout science and beyond!

Students in Mrs. Shumaker's science class used the scientific method to investigage which brand of dish soap would make the largest bubble. Students had to first formulate a hypothesis based on research. Students then followed a procedure to collect data by measuring the diameter of the bubble when it popped. Students then analyzed their data to decide whether their hypothesis was right or wrong. For the 4th year in a row, Joy has produced the largest bubble for a majority of students.

As part of their West Virginia history studies, our 8th grade students put their creativity and research skills to work by creating brochures highlighting different locations throughout the Mountain State. Each brochure features reasons to visit the location, its geographic region, area attractions, a tour summary, and a detailed three-day itinerary. These projects gave students an opportunity to explore West Virginia’s rich history, geography, and tourism while showcasing what makes each destination unique. We are excited to share their hard work and creativity through these photos!

Authors in the Spotlight: Where Stories Shine!

Some 6th grade ELA students stepped into the spotlight as they shared their personal narratives with classmates. Their stories were filled with vivid descriptions and figurative language that brought their experiences to life and helped listeners picture each moment. After each reading, classmates celebrated the authors by sharing positive comments and thoughtful feedback. It was a wonderful opportunity for our young writers to share their voices, creativity, and stories!

History Comes to Life!

Students were challenged to examine the iconic “Join, or Die” image and consider what the snake and its divided pieces might represent. First published in 1754, the image called for the colonies to unite in the face of a common threat.

Rather than simply being told the meaning, students explored the image through leading questions, building curiosity and making connections as they uncovered its historical significance. A great example of how powerful images and thoughtful questioning can bring history to life!
