Monday 6th and 8th grade had their first WV K12 Speaker of the Year: Joel Kirk, from Fairmont State University Aviation Center of Excellence.
Lt. Col. Kirk began his career as a Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Following basic Officer training and receiving his wings of gold, he piloted the mighty CH-53D/E Sea Stallion. In 1995 he was promoted to the rank of Captain and After attending SERE training he was selected to serve as a Forward Air Controller for 1st BN 3rd Marines. Following 2 tours as a CH-53 D/E Aircraft Commander, and an Infantry Air Officer, he was selected to return to the Naval Aviation Training Command where he served as a Flight Instructor and Flight Instructor Trainer (FITU) for CNATRA in the T-34C at Training Wing 5. After promotion to the rank of Major In 2000 he transferred to the United States Air Force to fly the KC-135 E/R Stratotanker. In 2005 he relocated to WV to fly the RC-26B for the Air Guard and Air Force Special Operations Command. In 2008 he was promoted to the rank of Lt. Col. He retired in 2013 after his last tour as Director of Training for the 745th Special Operations Squadron Hurlburt Field, FL. Lt. Colonel Kirk was deployed multiple times in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, New Dawn, Northern Watch, Noble Eagle, Restore Hope, Joint Forge, Tarpon Minnow and Cobra Gold.

Kirk is an Unrestricted Command Pilot, Functional Check Pilot, and Evaluator Pilot with more than 200 Combat and Combat Support Missions and more than 600 combat and support hours, He has accumulated over 2,000 Instructor hours and 7,000 flying hours in his career in various aircraft. Currently he holds an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate, MEI, CFII, CFI is rated in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He has served as Chief and Founder of the ACE since 2017.

7th Grade Teachers are featuring a Student of the Month. Here are the 7th Grade September Student of the Month!







In Mrs. Shumaker's science class students completed a lab where they followed a procedure, used the graduated cylinders, and 3 colored "chemicals" to produce a final product that looked like a rainbow!

Mrs. Zwiener's reading class is playing the board game Clue to focus on inferences and the mystery genre. Students are currently reading The Westing Game.

Mr. Moose visited our 8th grade Social Studies and Science classes to teach students about the species of snakes found here in WV.

Mr. Overstreet's 7th graders are starting a podcast discussing activities that are happening at our school, a teacher spotlight, and so much more. Today, they interviewed Mrs. Beck and Mrs. Kelly!

Ms. Reider's class celebrated Constitution Day last week. They researched, created posters, and even had apple pie. Ask your child about the lesson.

📣Reminder: All Monongalia County Schools will dismiss 2 hours early on Friday, August 29th. Schools and offices will be CLOSED on Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day.

Mrs. Nutter's math classes made spaghetti and marshmallow towers. They had a $400 budget to buy spaghetti and marshmallows. The goal was to stay within the budget and build the tallest freestanding tower in the allotted time frame while working as a team.

Our new 6th graders learned about our school-wide expectations and incentives program called The Herd.
